STUDIO THREE: Syd Barrett and The Pink Floyd record their first commercially successful experimental psychedelic album 'THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN'…

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was overseen by producer Norman Smith, and engineered by PETER BOWN [who had mentored trainee engineer CHRIS EVERARD], helped ensure that Pink Floyd's album had a unique sound, through his experimentation with equipment and recording techniques.

Peter Bown, assisted by studio manager David Harris [who would later become the manager of George Martin's AIR STUDIOS in Oxford Street], set up microphones an hour before the Pink Floyd sessions began.

Peter Bown's microphone choices were mostly different from those used by Smith to record the Beatles' EMI sessions - Peter had commissioned the EMI electronics division to create custom effects such as passive RING MODULATORS - some of this equipment was later de-camped to Peter Bown's personal studio in Greenwich, London, and then passed on to CHRIS EVERARD who added his own equipment and became the manager of Peter's studio...

Peter's studio would become a hot-bed of activity, with synthesiser designers such as Chris Huggit, EMU-Systems, Publison, Hammond and Korg using Chris Everard to record experimental music - it was the place where two polyphonic synthesisers and a polyphonic sample [EMU E1] were first ever connected using the MIDI computer language protocol...

Chris Everard's new documentary film, PIPERS AT THE GATES OF DAWN tells the story of how PSYCHEDELIC musicians, songwriters, animators, lighting designers, film-makers, authors, engineers and equipment manufacturers created a global multi-billion dollar industry which inspired Stanley Kubrick to use solarisation effects in his movie 2001 and provided a musical and visual escape route for millions of teenagers....

Leading this psychedelic revolution were the Beatles and Pink Floyd - this documentary traces the psychedelic revolution through the lens of specialist equipment used by Pink Floyd, Kubrick, Peter Bown and many other pioneers.

September 27 1968: STANLEY KUBRICK’S ’2001: A Space Odyssey’ is released at cinemas worldwide.

It was initially a BOX OFFICE FLOP - that is, until GROUPS OF HIPPIES began smoking pot and going to cinemas to see the epic end sequence which was interpreted by many millions of people as an ‘Astronaut having a psychedelic LSD trip at the moment of his death’…

Both YELLOW SUBMARINE and 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY prove to the giant EMI corporation and the world at large that an important ‘PSYCHEDELIC REVOLUTION’ in drugs, experimental cinema and music technology was taking place…

…Psychedelia was challenging the NEW WORLD ORDER…

It was turning over so much money that the Queen gave The Beatles M.B.E medals…!

However, after the success of their film YELLOW SUBMARINE, on 26th November, 1969, John Lennon and The Beatles returned their M.B.E. MEDALS to the Queen in protest at the British Commonwealth Office’s involvement in the BIAFRAN WAR and subsequent FAMINE…

Meanwhile, Pink Floyd went on to transform the music industry, churning millions of dollars at hundreds of gigs… Developing advanced lighting and audio technology which, in turn, inspired STEVE JOBS to create his own 'APPLE' CORPORATION.
