Right up until the 1940s, you could be arrested for engaging in witchcraft. Just foretelling someone's horoscope was enough to have you imprisoned during the 18th century. If you used astrology to predict the outcome of a battle or some political contest, you could be executed back in the 17th century - but not if you were a Hebrew Mystic living in one of Venice's Ghettos...

Our film shows that Venice became a mini kingdom, with its own laws separate from the rest of Europe - and was a hot-bed of occultism - this is the city-state where Kabbalah, horoscopes, magic squares, divination and great art fused into what today we call the TAROT...

Today, the word Ghetto means slum or prison - but it has never meant that - the word Ghetto comes from the old Italian word for metal foundry - a place where, say, silver candelabras or tooth fillings were melted and smelted into gold or silver coins. THAT is a Ghetto. The ghettoes of Venice granted Jewish citizens virtual monopolies on pawn-broking, book printing, textiles trading and would often turn a blind eye to occult practices such as astrology, fortune-telling, Kabbalah and TAROT...

Even the printing of hate-crime books such as the Talmud from Babylonia, which advocates the killing of Christians, was tolerated in the ghettoes of Venice.
Many early Hebrew books were first published in the ghettoes of Venice. In fact, nearly a third of Hebrew books printed in Europe before 1650 were printed in Venice. Again, this was a virtual monopoly - but has since been painted into history as part of the 'restrictions' imposed by the ghetto. The fact is that the ghetto offered PROTECTION to jewish mystics which meant that non-jewish armed forces and taxes were used to protect the Jewish mystical community in times of war or persecution from the INQUISITION.

The laws of Europe were not respected within the Venetian ghettoes - which had their own interpretations of the 'law' - such as the age of consent.

Child slaves from Byzantium and Africa were just one of the illicit trade-goods you could find in the northern Adriatic region and the lagoon of Venice. Byzantium children were trained as courtesans and to be the bed-companions of noble men and women who visited Venice for gambling.

For the most part, conventional law and conventional policing was not applied to the community inside the Venice ghettoes...
