The Sons of Dawn...

Wide-eyed and ecstatic, speeding, feeling sexually and intellectually primed, their nostrils filled with the intoxicating aromas of incense, their eyes seeing the etheric, quivering, plasma-like glow and lattice work of the aura over all faces, bodies and objects, the sacred anointing oil and inhaled infusions delivered the so called Teachers of Righteousness and their devotees to a psychic landscape made of pure expanded consciousness...

In this altered state of Holiness, floating in salted waters, they sought the Word of Yaweh and would bathe away the unwanted side effects of their psycho-active unctions, able to control their body temperature and concentrate on enjoying the higher visions of a holy dream-state in the desert night.

Such was the nightly devout activities of the 'Sons of Dawn' described in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Ingesting Mandrake and Henbane causes the pupils to dilate and this makes bright light uncomfortable - again, this is a side effect one could not feasibly endure in the already bright desert. The copious references to all night vigils in the Dead Sea Scrolls points me to the conclusion that ritualistic ingestion and anointing probably took place at night or at dawn - the nightshade family having always been the drug of choice for 'witches' and creatures of the night.

It is interesting to note, that since these rituals most probably took place at night or dawn, this could be the origin for this plant family’s common botanical name; the ‘nightshade’ plants. The plants of shadows. The Goetia, also known as the Book of Shadows in some European translations, contains within it, spells or invocations to bring forth the demons who were also known as ‘shades’ or ‘shadows’.

At night, with small clay oil lamps placed around the pool, anointed Essenes could bathe whilst listening to elders singing incantations, psalms and hymns. This is perhaps the true meaning of a Baptism. The air heavy with Frankincense, Myrrh and Benzoin, the water infused with aromatic herbs and the body tingling and shimmering with heat, subjects would float in cool waters, receiving instruction from an Essene Gnostic and perhaps be read treatise from the Qumran library for contemplation during this altered state of consciousness. What a sublime and perfect way to cleanse oneself of the accumulated detritus of living in an urban society - with such a large number of bathing pools in the Qumran community, one must wonder if ritualistic bathing was not a pastime for which large parts of their settlement were especially built - they had, after all, deliberately ousted themselves from the city, and taken up residence in the desert, far from the madding crowd of Rabbis. The Essenes were self-exiled religious purists, following a gnosis which, through baptism, delivered their psyche to the Godhead.
