Estimates of the number killed by the Spanish Inquisition, which Pope Sixtus IV authorised in a papal bull in the year 1478, have ranged from 30,000 to 300,000.

Some historians are convinced that millions died... In 1480 the Inquisition was introduced to provide institutional control over the persecution of the 'Marranos'.

'Marranos' is one of the terms used in relation to Spanish and Portuguese Jews who converted or were forced by the Spanish and Portuguese crowns to convert to some form of Catholicism.

Secretly, at home, many retained their adherence to Jewish mysticism. The pogroms and scares that followed drove many Jews to the lagoon of Venice - part of which is now known as the Lagoon of Murranos - Lagoon of the Jews.

All the while, through fake book burnings, the Jews collected a vast library of medieval texts - yes they burned books in public - but because most peasants could not read, ANY book would do for the public persecution... You see, many 'converted' Murranos actually became torturers and 'Witch Hunters' in their own right and thus turned the tables on the Vatican...

The inquisitions as we understand them got their start in the late 12th century in response to the rise of Catharism in southern France. This started with Pope Lucius III issuing a decree demanding that local governments prosecute heretics. This was expanded on by Innocent III a few years later who included provisions for an "inquisition" which at the time referred to a special trial for prosecuting priests and bishops who were committing "excesses". Eventually Pope Gregory IX established what is called the "Papal Inquisition" which bypassed local governments altogether.

Pope Gregory staffed the Inquisition by members of the Dominican religious order. The Dominicans, officially called the "Order of Preachers", was (and is) a Catholic mendicant religious order similar to the Franciscans.

Jews - either professing 'conversion' or not - fled to Venice where they set up international loan sharking and banking scams, or fled to the Americas and got heavily involved in the SLAVE TRADE.
